“Driving” Practice

Were you thinking car? Golf? I bet you didn’t think FMQ.

Well, driving is the best way I can describe it because it takes more than just “pushing” the fabric. You have to remember to breathe, relax, move your hands often by stopping and repositioning, and to take your time.

With all that said, I wanted to practice my “driving” so that I can be more steady and accurate when quilting. I want to be more relaxed and confident, but mostly I want to remember to breathe lol! So I dug through my stash and found some scraps and matching larger pieces and began playing around with triangles and sashing.

I worked on quilting straight lines, but did so by starting in the center and working my way outward.

Some of the lines turned out pretty straight and others a bit more organic lol. I am not sure what it is called, but I quilted a chain design in the skinny sashing between the triangles. That design felt more comfortable than straight lines, but I guess that is why I was practicing my “driving” skills, huh?

I ended making 2 runners in this same style. I feel less anxiety about practicing my quilting on smaller projects like these, rather than a quilt top that took many more hours to create. For me, this helps me figure out how to maneuver around the pieces/blocks without getting stuck and having to stop and start again.

My 2 complete table runners

Even after making these table runners, I still had some odds and ends leftover from this stash of scraps and made 2 more runners. I will share those with you after I bind them.

Stay safe!
Becki 🙂
