Memory Pillows

Are you one of those people that keep mementos that belonged to loved ones? That one item that helps you feel a little closer to that person that is watching over you from heaven? Well, I am one of those people and find that it helps me to hold that one special thing of Jake’s just to feel a little closer to him.

This same scenario is true for many of us, which is why when I was contacted by a lady – I will call her Jane – asking if I would make her some pillows from her dad’s old robe, I couldn’t say no.

Fast forward to my receiving the robe, doing a lot of thinking and planning, and finally deciding on what the end pieces would be – and of course the anxiety of “What if I totally mess this up and ruin Jane’s dad’s robe!” thoughts I had – I began cutting…

I choose a Kona Coal jelly roll for the sashing,
and a slate smooth minky for the back.

After piecing the top of the pillow, I backing it with cotton batting and did some simple straight line quilting.

Complete pillow top.

I was really happy how the straight lines complemented the print of the robe. There were some blocks that had a seam from how the robe was made, but that just gives it more character I think.

I was able to make 4 large pieced pillows for Jane.

Using the sleeves of the robe, I cut out a “Warren the Charity Bear” by Shiny Happy World. I had the pattern for a while, and knew this was the perfect project to use it!

Isn’t he just the sweetest bear ever?! You can see I hand-stitched the eyes, nose/muzzle, and heart on him. I just love how he turned out and how huggable he is!

I have to share this heartfelt way of thinking about this little guy… Having used Jane’s dad’s robe sleeves to make the bear, every time Jane’s grandbaby hugs the bear, Jane’s dad is hugging right back 🙂 How cool is that! I know. I am so sentimental, but that’s ok.

I was able to make Jane 4 pieced pillow, 2 pillows with pockets, and 1 sweet little bear. I was very honored that she trusted me with such a precious task.

Thank you Jane!
Becki 🙂
